“Survivors of rape deserve dignity, justice, and a chance to rebuild.”
— Motto of Dr. Mukwege's Panzy Hospital in DRC
NEW YORK, NY, ÉTATS-UNIS, April 27, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Eight award-winning African films from Tunisia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, South Africa, Chad, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo will be showcased from April 29 to May 1, 2016 at Teachers College Columbia University.

One of the highlights of the film series is The Man Who Mends Women - The Wrath of Hippocrates by Thierry Michel and Colette Braeckman, an homage to the remarkable African Doctor Denis Mukwege who has helped thousands of women sexually assaulted during the 20 years of conflicts in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Part of a group of important African leaders such as Wangari Maathai, Wole Soyinka, Almicar Cabral, Thomas Sankara, Patrice Lumumba, and many others – Dr. Mukwege is internationally known as a man who has committed his life and talent to the welfare of his people in an effort to improve their human condition.

Dr. Mukwege’s endless struggle to put an end to the atrocities in his country and denounce the impunity enjoyed by the perpetrators is not welcome. Threatened with death, he now lives cloistered in his hospital in Bukavu. But he is no longer alone in his struggle. The women to whom he has restored physical integrity and dignity, stand beside him, true activists for peace, hungry for justice.

The Man Who Mends Women - The Wrath of Hippocrates - winner of 5 Human Rights Awards, 3 Audience Awards, and 4 Grand Prizes for Best Documentary in festivals worldwide - will screen at Teachers College, Columbia University (525 West 120th Street – Room 136 Thompson) on Sunday, May 1 at 4pm.

ABOUT THE AFRICAN DIASPORA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Described by film critic Armond White as “a festival that symbolizes diaspora as more than just anthropology,” ADIFF has managed to increase the presence of independent Afrocentric films from all over the world in the general American specialty movie scene by launching films such as The Tracker by Rolf de Heer (Australia), Kirikou and the Sorceress by Michel Ocelot (France), Gospel Hill by Giancarlo Esposito (USA), Darrat/Dry Season by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (Chad), The First Rasta by Helene Lee (France/Jamaica), The Story of Lovers Rock by Menelik Shabazz (UK) Scheherazade, Tell Me a Story by Yousry Nasrallah (Egypt), and The Pirogue by Moussa Touré among others. Attracting a wider cross-section of cinephiles and audiences of African-American, Caribbean, African, Latino and European ethnic backgrounds that share a common interest for good stories about the human experience of people of color, ADIFF is now a national and international event with festivals held in New York City, Chicago, Washington DC, and Paris, France.
